Smell Burning From Your Dryer? What to Do Right Now

If you smell burning, shut it off. A burning smell from your dryer usually means a small fire has already started inside it, hidden in lint you can't see. Don't wait to see if it goes away.

Do this right away

  1. Turn the dryer off.

  2. Unplug it if you can do it safely. For a gas dryer, shut off the gas valve behind it if you can reach it safely.

  3. Don't run it again until it's been checked.

  4. If you see smoke or flames, get everyone out and call 911.

Why it happens

Your lint trap doesn't catch everything. Lint slips past and packs into the vent pipe, behind the dryer and all the way to the outside. When air can't flow, heat builds up, and lint catches fire easily. Crushed hoses behind the dryer and bird nests in the outside vent block airflow too.

Other warning signs

  • Clothes take more than one cycle to dry

  • The dryer or laundry room feels unusually hot

  • Lint around the outside vent flap

  • The flap barely opens when the dryer is running

How we clean it

We're CSIA certified. We clean the lint trap, pull the dryer out and clean behind it, and check for leaks. Then we hook up our vacuum and brush the vent all the way through to the outside, and check the airflow at the exterior vent. You get before and after photos and video, so you know it was done right.

Stay safe every year

A yearly cleaning keeps lint from building back up. Sign up for annual service and your rate stays locked in as long as you keep your annual service.
